If We Had It To Do All Over....

Long before the internet had all of the information it has today on the best way to insure you bring home a puppy that has the best chance at a balanced, happy, healthy life....we had the classified news paper ads. YEP, you go it our first Dane was from an ad in the local news paper. Hannah was AKC registered but not a health certified or champion Dane on the photo copied pedigrees in the first 3 generations...but there was several generations back and the breeders was sure to highlight and underline that information like it was a real plus. But, as you can see in the picture above Hannah turned out to be a beautiful companion that we spayed at 6 months and enjoyed tremendously until the day we had to say goodbye. In upcoming posts I will tell YOU what I wish SOMEONE would have told me before bringing Hannah home. I always say, "If I knew what I should be asking I would..." the problem is we often don't know what we don't know and ignorance is not always bliss.

This is so great Stacie! I think the information you have to share will be invaluable to so many people. You are so right, it truly doesn't matter where you get your dog, you love them just the same. BUT, when you know better, you do better. I have learned so much from my weim friends about what it means to be a reputable breeder and although I know that I myself would never get into showing or breeding, I understand and respect those of you who do it well and responsibly. My poor Frieda was rescued from a man who had a byb set up with her and her mate, Gunner. Frieda had had 7 litters by age 5 when she was finally rescued. Her mate was not so lucky. He ended up dying from an ear infection because the owner did not get him the vet treatment he needed. The dogs were kept outside only (including new puppies), in all weather conditions. Many puppies died from exposure. They were free fed with an entire bag of food thrown out on the ground for them. Then they went for days without food. I know all of this because the woman who rescued Frieda was this guy's next door neighbor and she ran the local animal shelter. She tried for years to get these dogs away from him. Glad she was finally successful. I know there is a need for good breeders and kuddos to those of you who do it well. Even though I would likely never get a dog from a breeder, I will be one of those people who will help support all of those other dogs in need of homes that end up in shelters and rescue because of negligent and selfish people who do not have the best interest of dogs in mind. Thank you for being an ethical, responsible and loving breeder of Danes!

Hannah-B loved to keep me company when I was working in the yard, regardless of the weather. Danes can sometimes be fair weather fans when it comes to just hanging around outside, particularly if it's raining. Not Hannah. If you were outside, that's where she wanted to be. That's how she became our "Always Faithful Hannah-B." I miss her dearly.

I often get asked the same questions over and over by dog owners and those looking into being a dog owner...so I thought I would start posting information here for people to access and refer back to as the need arises.
